This book is titled “Eight Figures of the Indonesian Pluralism Movement: Differences for Justice, Humanity, and Peace.” The title was originally “Learning from Eight Indonesian Interfaith Figures on Understanding Differences for Justice, Humanity, and Peace.” The change does not alter the purpose and aspiration of this book.

Each figure is portrayed by eight skilled writers who are well-acquainted with their subjects, both through literature and personal interaction. They write brief biographies, thoughts, and contributions of each figure, as well as the significance of their work for communities, society, and the Indonesian nation.

These eight comprehensive essays explore the lives, ideas, and roles of eight Indonesian interfaith figures—founders and initiators of Interfidei, critical thinkers, supporters, advisors, and inspirational public intellectuals across faiths, all of whom were close to Interfidei. They are:

  1. Th. Sumartana, written by Trisno Sutanto

  2. Djohan Effendi, written by Neng Dara

  3. Rev. Eka Darmaputra, written by Albertus Patty

  4. Daniel Dhakidae, written by Ignatius Haryanto

  5. Ibu Gedong Bagoes Oka, written by Listia

  6. Father YB Mangunwijaya, written by Made Supriatma

  7. Abdurrahman Wahid, written by Ahmad Suaedy

  8. Father Neles Kebadabi Tebay, written by Father John Bunay

The book also includes a Publisher’s Introduction (by A. Elga J. Sarapung, Otto Adi Yulianto, Noorhalis Madjid), Editor’s Note (Zakaria J. Ngelow), and Content Introduction (Budhy Munawar-Rachman), and concludes with an Epilogue (Franz Magnis Suseno) along with endorsements from 20 young figures of Indonesia’s pluralism movement.
